Moro, Lasso was commissioned by the Tetractys new music concert series, and was premiered on November 12, 2015 at the First Street Studio in Austin, Texas. The piece is inspired by Carlo Gesualdo’s ‘Moro, lasso, al mio duolo’, as well as Gesualdo’s own life. The work borrows several musical ideas and textures from not only Gesualdo’s madrigal, but also from 16th century Italian Renaissance instrumental music. The piece attempts to musically capture Gesualdo’s famously troubled state of mind.
